About Memory Problems
And Dementia

Losing track of time or forgetting to pay a bill every now and then does not necessarily mean your memory is failing. However, when remembering things becomes increasingly more difficult, or your thinking skills seem to be deteriorating, it may be a warning sign of dementia—a devastating and eventually debilitating neurological condition.

Memory Loss and Dementia

The disease of our time

Every three seconds someone, somewhere is diagnosed with a form of dementia. By the year 2030 that figure is expected to quadruple. Despite hundreds of billions of dollars spent seeking a cure, a magic bullet, the pharmaceutical industry is nowhere nearer to finding a solution.

The problem is that dementia is not a single disease. Rather, it has its origins in multiple insults on the brain. Stress hormones, blood sugar disturbances, low thyroid function, ageing, anaemias, environmental pollution, sedentary lifestyles and even lack of proper sleep are just some of the factors that combine in varying degrees and place a tremendous strain on the brain's coping mechanisms. The result ? Not only a failing memory but the proliferation, as we are witnessing, of mental illness.

The Dementias

Dementia is an umbrella term that refers to a category of progressive degenerative diseases that affect important brain functions and lead to memory loss, difficulty with language, cognitive impairment, and personality and behaviour changes. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common and well-known type of dementia.

Vascular Dementia

Vascular dementia is a cognitive decline caused by reduced blood flow to the brain, often due to strokes or vessel damage. It leads to memory loss, impaired thinking, and personality changes.

Alzheimer's

Alzheimer's disease is a progressive brain disorder causing memory loss, cognitive decline, and personality changes. It damages brain cells, leading to difficulties in daily functioning and, eventually, loss of independence.

Lewy Body Dementia

Lewy body dementia is a brain disorder causing memory loss, hallucinations, and fluctuating cognitive function. It combines symptoms of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's, with motor difficulties and visual hallucinations due to abnormal protein deposits in the brain.

Parkinsons' Dementia

Parkinson’s dementia occurs in individuals with Parkinson’s disease, causing progressive cognitive decline alongside motor symptoms like tremors and rigidity. It affects memory, judgment, and reasoning, leading to confusion, mood changes, and impaired daily functioning as brain cell damage advances.

Hypothyroid Induced Dementia

Hypothyroid-induced dementia is cognitive decline linked to untreated or severe hypothyroidism. Low thyroid hormone levels impair brain function, leading to memory loss, confusion, and slowed thinking. Unlike other dementias, it’s potentially reversible with thyroid hormone replacement, improving cognitive symptoms.

Fronto Temporal Dementia

Frontotemporal dementia (FTD) is a group of disorders affecting the brain’s frontal and temporal lobes, leading to personality changes, impaired judgment, and language difficulties. Unlike Alzheimer’s, memory often remains intact initially, while behavioral changes and emotional instability dominate.

Hypothyroid Induced Dementia

Menopause-induced dementia refers to cognitive decline linked to hormonal changes during menopause, especially reduced estrogen, which supports brain function. Symptoms include memory lapses, difficulty concentrating, and mood swings. Unlike degenerative dementias, these symptoms can improve with hormone therapy and lifestyle changes.

B12 Deficiency Dementia

B12 deficiency dementia arises from low vitamin B12 levels, impairing nerve and brain function. It causes memory loss, confusion, mood changes, and cognitive decline. Early detection and B12 supplementation can often reverse symptoms, distinguishing it from other dementias.

Mixed Dementia

Mixed dementia involves multiple types of dementia simultaneously, commonly Alzheimer's and vascular dementia. Symptoms vary but often include memory loss, confusion, and impaired thinking. Diagnosis is challenging, and symptoms can progress rapidly. Treatment focuses on managing each contributing condition.

Alcohol Induced Dementia

Alcohol-induced dementia, also known as alcohol-related brain damage (ARBD), results from chronic heavy drinking that damages brain cells, leading to cognitive decline, memory loss, and impaired executive function. Alcohol interferes with nutrient absorption, especially B vitamins, which are essential for brain health. Prolonged alcohol use also causes brain atrophy, primarily affecting areas responsible for decision-making, memory, and emotions. If detected early and with sustained sobriety, some cognitive functions may improve, though severe cases often lead to permanent damage. Managing ARBD involves nutritional support, therapy, and lifestyle changes to help reduce symptoms and improve quality of life.
